Intrinsically, humans gravitate toward organised action and having people who can lead a group of others well. Sound leadership improves the likelihood of achieving goals and the power of scalable influence should be harnessed. Organisations comment that many managers have not been specifically trained to lead people, make decisions, communicate, and get team buy-in. Being a good people leader only comes naturally to some, but that potential requires development to learn the skills to become an effective leader.
There are many ways to develop leadership ability, however there is a general lack of access to functional, connected and experiential training which speeds up the learning process due to its intensive nature. In a world where interpersonal connection has become affected by many forms of isolation, we need to strengthen peoples connections, cultural understanding, and leadership ability. Our region is separated geographically, has ‘brain drain’ issues, and faces local and global impacts on our way of life.
We have an opportunity and responsibility to facilitate access for our youth, and ignite their spark to lead us into the future. The South West Pacific has strong values based people, and with the right support, is an example for the rest of the world to follow.
Future Leaders Academy was established in 2013, to deliver leadership development training and experiences. Although our flagship program is running advanced student leaders trips to the Pacific Islands, we also work with the NZ Government, schools, corporates and clubs. Functional team leadership development is a highly transferable skill. We kept hearing that access to practical leadership development in both the youth space and business sector was lacking.
Giving leaders the tools and support to start and grow in their role is extremely important, as their actions are influential, are responsible for the well-being and outputs of their team, and are entrusted to achieve the visions of their organisation. Combining these tools with cultural traditions and connection takes our training to a whole new level.
Our team has a diverse background from the military, business, youth development, to government and international expeditions across NZ, Australia and the Pacific Islands. Strength from multi-cultural unity is an asset to any team, and we foster that connection and understanding, to build high performing teams.
